RE: On The Road To Alaska

We are well & truly homeward bound. All roads lead south & east for us. Today we tried to get into a Provincial Park near Smithers, BC. Absolutely full. Onward we went & have stumbled on a rare gem of a private BC CG.
We are in Shady Rest RV Park, Houstin, BC. Sounds like a retirement home or a cemetary but it is a clean CG with good site separation & mature trees for shade. WIFI seems to work well CG wide, a very rare treat indeed, & there is no extra charge for it.
From here, it is S to Jasper then Calgary for a few days of Stampede.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

For anyone going to or coming from Valdez there is a pretty little state rec CG just N of Glenallen that is worth an overnight. It is dry camping but at $12, who can complain. The private Glenallen CGs look like dirt carparks.
Also, for a resupply stop on the way to Kenai or coming from Kenai & close enough to Anchorage for a day trip, stop in Wassila. We did Alaskan Trails CG each way. 50amp no extra charge. WIFI no extra charge (worked sort of). Permitted to wash RV at site, no extra charge. Full hook ups at every site. New & clean washroom & laundry. The place is a work in progress. Site grading & reliable WIFI could almost make it a 10. The owners are trying & deserve support.

RE: Memphis area stop over

If you are going to see Elvis there is a SP no more than 15 minutes from Graceland. In the trees. You would think you are miles from any city. Can't remember the name offhand.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

I am sitting in Bear Paw (adult), Valdez. Been here 3 nights. Not even half full. Other CGs in town are nowhere near capacity too. Strong WIFI (secure & no extra charge) plus cable (at no extra charge) here too. Tourboats running at far below capacity. No problems anywhere in AK for CGs yet.

RE: Doubletree Select Suites

Fiverdude, the MS 32TK3 was at the top of our list, if we were going to have to buy new. Drooled all over it at a couple of shows. We wound up with our Alpenlite 34Ltd which is very similar in floorplan & specs to the MS 32TK3 but is close to the MS Elite series in the purdy stuff. There is nothing wrong with buying used, if you know what you want & are prepared to play the waiting game till it shows up for sale. Ours was 6 months old. The previous owner had not researched the RV lifestyle. He wanted it sold & it was the worst possible time of year to sell, fall.
The MS are nice. I would not hesitate in putting them on the prefered list if buying again.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

It has been awhile since we have had reliable internet service. I think it is safe to say that we are homeward bound now, even though 'home' for the truck & trailer is still over 6000 miles away in MD.
We arrived Valdez today. Thompson Pass was interesting. Hope to see it on the way back. It was in the clouds today. Visibility, less than 100'.
Get enough fuel for round trip in Glenallen. You don't want to know what gas is here, even with that big pipe dumping oil into the tankers right across the fjiord.

RE: Top of the World Highway is it narrow

We did the TOW a few weeks ago, 3rd day that the ferry was back in operation. It was a snap. We made it a 2 day trip. Depends on what you are used to. Certainly no worse than mountain roads in the lower 48. An interstate compared to what the buses of Denali travel on. Just drive within your safe skill level & your vehicles capabilities & all will be easy.

Trailair Hitches

I have put better than 15,000 miles on my Trailair hitch. For the most part I am happy with the performance however I am constantly having to reinflate it.
I have seen threads where most people seem to need about 80#PSI for proper inflation. I have a somewhat heavier than average trailer with a loaded weight approaching 15,000# requiring 115 to 125#PSI to carry the load at the recommended level.
Has anyone else run into this deflation problem (every few days)? I only just met anoother Trailair owner who siad something about getting a larger bag to carry the load.

RE: Gel Coat Fading

A 2 step process. 3M cleaner wax then a good sealer such as Meguires Protectant both buffed with a good machine such as a Makita buffer. It is work, but the results are well worth the effort.

RE: Mackinaw City, MI West via Rte 2

We did the rt2 way just a few weeeks ago. Other than than the snow storm that trapped us for a few days in MN, rt 2 is an easy drive. We crossed into Canada at Portal, ND after a night in Minot, ND. No problems.

We were at Savage just a few days ago. No snow. No water, but all should be OK by now. 3 days dry camping, no problem.

RE: DIESEL PRICES ON ALASKA HIGHWAY

Having the auxilliary tank really comes in handy in playing the 'try to get best price' game along with various discount cards.
We saw >$5/gal diesel between Denali & Talkeetna a couple days ago. Didn't even lighten up on the pedal as we went by.
Next fuel stop, Wassilla.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

Anchoraweigh, you might just catch up with us yet. Are you in in Savage or the CG next to the highway? We had 2" accumulation a few mornings ago but it was gone in a couple hours. Last night was 1st of 3 in Talkeetna then on to Wassila for a major resupply.

RE: Comments on this combo??? (Carriage Cameo)

Nobody else touched on the genny question. Your 3kw genny can do an awful lot. You just need to be aware of what the demands are at any point in time. The AC, for example, does not need much to run. It DOES need alot to start the compressor. That microwave oven needs alot but how long do you run that. Once the water is hot the water heater burns next to nothing to keep it hot. Non heat producing thing things like TVs etc burn next to nothing.

RE: fuel savings towing a 5ver

TT or 5er, the best way to get better milage is to SLOW DOWN. On the mostly level at 60-62mph we can get 11.5mpg with out of our Isuzu V8 6 speed diesel towing a #15,000 plus 5er. There is no free lunch. Want to see better milage? Get yer foor out of the tank, especially now with the price of fuel. We saw $5 plus some deisel today N of Denali Nat Park.

RE: Solar Panel Wires

To get to the basement send it down the holding tank vent. You will need to seal the hole real good around the wire after the install. From there to the panel controller & on to the battery bank.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

After 4 nights in Fairbanks doing the touristy stuff & domestic stuff like laundry & a good interior home cleaning, it is time to move on. Almost full marks to the Chena Marina RV resort. Just a few short outages in WIFI service. We plan somewhere near Denali tonight & Denali for 4 nights after that. We have reservations at Teklanika cg but hear that is closed till late in June so we don't know what will happen to us. Ain't traveling fun???? The unknown sure beats a bus tour.

RE: Foreigners wanting to register a privatley purchased RV

Me wonders how many how many who have all the advice on how a NON US citizen can own a vehicle such as an RV or a boat in the US have actually had to DO it!!!!!
A visa is NOT necessarily required to be in the US for an extended time & has NOTHING to do with vehicle registration. Residents of some countrys, particularly British Commonwealth countrys, such as Canada, most likely NZ etc. can be in the US visa free for 180 days a year, provided they are not deriving a US generated income while there.
